Both are young, both are successful and both have a small anniversary to celebrate on Wednesday. In the top game between Manchester City and Paris St-Germain, Kylian Mbappé will make his 50th Champions League appearance and Phil Foden his 30th Champions League appearance.

The 22-year-old French and 21-year-olds embody the new generation of young superstars and will one day succeed Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. Currently, the young stars are still in a pursuit to see who can win the Champions League first.

On Wednesday, both offensive players want to secure the round of 16 qualification with their clubs. PSG need a win for that, ManCity a draw is enough. And should RB Leipzig win in the parallel game against Bruges, both teams would be through anyway.

The highlights of the game between Manchester City and PSG as well as the summaries of the other games will be available on Wednesday from 23:00 on the “Champions League – Goool” program on SRF Zwei.

The round of 16 qualifying should no longer be hard work for both clubs, but rather the two most valuable teams in the world with Messi, Neymar, Jack Grealish and Co. – and in the middle Mbappé and Foden – a prestige duel.

When it comes to success, Mbappé, who is 17 months older, is a bit ahead of Foden. The Frenchman won the world championship title in 2018 with “Les Bleus”, plus four championship trophies with PSG. He is the number 1 striker in both teams.

Foden has been world champion before, but only with the U17s, and since this summer he has been able to call himself vice-European champion. He won the championship three times with ManCity and is regularly praised by coach Pep Guardiola.

Both have had a strong season so far. With eight goals as a center forward, Mbappé has three more hits than Foden. But the Englishman impresses most with his versatility, which makes him an offensive player who couldn’t be a better match for Guardiola.

Two CL final defeats

What connects the two, besides their huge talent, is a final defeat in the premier class: Mbappé lost with PSG to Bayern Munich in August 2020, Foden met with ManCity almost a year later against Chelsea.

These disappointments should be forgotten in the current season. Both want to take the next step in a direct duel on Wednesday evening. And ideally outperform the competition at the same time.
