Rhein-Erft-Kreis: Woman falls for Whatsapp fraud

Rhein-Erft district –

The cases of fraud via WhatsApp are piling up, the perpetrators usually capture sums of several 1000 euros. Now, however, unknown persons brought a 72-year-old for more than 50,000 euros – an unprecedented amount for police spokesman Thomas Held. The pensioner had responded to several WhatsApp messages from her supposed son and repeatedly transferred large sums.

The sender claimed to be her son. He lost his cell phone and therefore has a new phone number. Since he was unable to make online transfers with the replacement cell phone, he asked his mother for help. It was only when the real son contacted her the next day that the fraud was noticed. The woman alerted the police and contacted her bank to contain the damage.

Held recommends ignoring such messages and not transferring any money. If there is any suspicion, you should contact the relatives on the well-known telephone number and inform the police. (jtu)
