Although Poliomyelitis has been eradicated in Brazil since 1994, experts are concerned about the reintroduction of the disease because of the low rate of vaccination coverage.

According to data from the Information System of the National Immunization Program (SIPNI), in Mato Grosso, this year, until this Monday (27.06), vaccination coverage is 41.86%. In 2021, vaccination coverage in the state was 75%. The national target is 95% coverage.

In Brazil, the drop in vaccination coverage against Poliomyelitis has been recorded since 2016. Poliomyelitis is a highly acute infectious disease, which can infect children and adults, causing paralysis of the legs (flaccid paralysis).

“We are currently at a high risk of reintroduction of the disease due to not reaching the goals of the indicators, especially the vaccination coverage that is below the minimum expected levels”, warns the technician of SES-MT, Kellen Luzia da Silva Anunciação, creator and event coordinator.

The schedule of the 1st Epidemiological Surveillance Webinar for Acute Flaccid Palsy/Poliomyelitis contains lectures on the definition of suspected and confirmed cases, diagnosis, treatment, disease investigation, prevention and control measures, case closure with patient revisits and vaccination, among others. themes.

The specialists will speak at the event: Carlos Otto Heise, head of the Electroneuromyography Sector at the Hospital das Clínicas, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo; Fernanda Burlandy, biologist at the National Reference Laboratory for PFA/Poliomyelitis at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (Fiocruz); Zirlei Matos, representative of PFA/Poliomyelitis Surveillance of the Ministry of Health and Ana Carolina, technician of the National Immunization Program of the Ministry of Health.
