For this list of the best games of 2022 to pre-order now, we looked specifically at the games you can already pre-order. Of course, this concerns the titles that are also planned for 2022. If the game is not yet available for pre-order (or not on digital shelves), the game will not appear on this list.
Release Date: January 28, 2022
We’ll kick off this list with the game coming out the fastest. It concerns Pokémon Legends Arceus, a brand new direction for the franchise that celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. This time it’s not about a traditional Pokémon title where you simply have to tackle eight gyms and an Elite Four. Pokémon Legends Arceus focuses on the antiquity of the series and will be more like an action RPG with large open areas.
That new direction is therefore what makes it still unclear what the quality of Pokémon Legends Arceus will be. Usually Game Freak manages to deliver a good to great experience, but with a completely new direction there is reason to be hesitant. On the other hand, it seems like a breath of fresh air for the series that many (older) fans have been hoping for for years.
Release Date: February 4, 2022
Dying Light 2 is also planned for early 2022. Dying Light 2 Stay Human, the new game from Techland, will be released on February 4, 2022. The Polish developer has already announced how much time you can put into the game and that makes you fall back for a while.
The game takes about 500 hours to complete (via a completionist playthrough), but you can of course finish faster. For the story and a bit of noses in the side missions you will lose between 70 and 80 hours. That means you get a lot of zombie fun for your money, all in the form of a big open-world FPS.
Release Date: February 18, 2022
2022 is the year in which Dutch glory appears in the form of Horizon Forbidden West. The sequel to the 2017 title for the PS4 has been in the works for a long time, and the open-world game is coming to the PlayStation 4 and PS5 on February 18. Aloy is back and seems to have an even bigger adventure in store for PlayStation fans.
The expectations for the sequel are high, especially because the studio seems to take all feedback from the previous part into account for the sequel. Add to that brand new environments and mechanics that are further deepened and all the ingredients for a top title seem to be ready. It is therefore logical that fans are salivating to get started with Horizon Forbidden West.
Release Date: February 25, 2022
Sekiro Shadows Die Twice managed to blow away friend and foe in 2019. Developer FromSoftware wants to do that again, but in 2022. This time the title fans should be making is called Elden Ring.
FormSoftware brings with Elden Ring an open-world game that is mixed with Soulsborne gameplay. So expect a game that is hard to fully figure out with incredibly deep lore and world building. In fact, the latter is made possible in part by George RR Martin, which only increases the hype.
Release date: March 18, 2022
From Elden Ring we switch to Final Fantasy. It’s just not Final Fantasy XVI, but Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. Team Ninja is working on this action RPG where you play as Jack Garland. How the gameplay will unfold is just a bit unclear for now.
Team Ninja has delivered many different action-packed titles, but in a variety of forms. For example, the Nioh games are from Team Ninja, but the studio is also known for the Dead or Alive titles and the two Hyrule Warriors titles are also from Team Ninja. How the game will feel is also an important piece of the puzzle, but that should not spoil the fun for Final Fantasy fans.
Release date: March 25, 2022
Borderlands 3 was an outright hit when the game came out in 2019. 2022 has now arrived and a spin-off of the well-known shooter series is planned. It is a game in which magic and fantasy is more central in the form of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.
This Borderlands 2 Assault on Dragon’s Keep DLC spin-off promises to be bigger and crazier than the 2013 expansion. In addition, the many improvements that Borderlands 3 contained are carried over to the new title. Time to get your group of friends together again, because you can again with four players via local or online co-op with crazy weapons.
Release Date: May 24, 2022
In May, all the birds will lay an egg, but Square Enix will also pamper players with the new game from the team behind Final Fantasy XV. It is Forspoken, an open-world action RPG from Luminous Productions. This PS5 console exclusive promises fast, fluid combat and exploration in a vast fairytale world full of monsters.
Not too many details have been revealed about the story yet, other than that we play as Frey Holland. The young lady has been mysteriously transported from New York to fantasy world Athia and suddenly has a range of magical powers. The dialogues just don’t sound very natural yet, but if that can be polished up before release, this seems to be a very cool title that looks stunning.
Release date: Spring 2022
LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga is now almost three years old. At least that’s how long it’s been since the game was announced. During E3 2019, the undersigned saw the game behind closed doors, but it has been quiet around the game since then.
Still, there is little reason to worry, because TT Games usually delivers very cool titles. When it comes to the LEGO games, almost all the titles are of high quality and in LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga the team seems to be tinkering with its magnum opus. The game seems to present much more open spaces, while the scale seems to be larger than ever.
Release date: August 23, 2022
2022 is the year when Saints Row is finally back. The fourth part is now nine years old and so it is time for a reboot of the series. The sandbox game is therefore looking for a warmer location and seems to contain a bit more realism. No longer is it about clubbing people with giant purple dildos, but the series just goes back to basics.
In Santo Ileso you are The Boss of a street gang and it’s up to you to wipe the bigger players near the map. You don’t have to do this alone, because via drop-in co-op you can also control the nine districts of the city together. The new, more serious tone of the trailers with a good dose of action and of course some humor seems to be a breath of fresh air for the series and we simply can’t wait for that.
Release Date: 2022
Finally, there is also the sequel to The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. The still untitled game from Nintendo is scheduled for 2022, but has not yet been given a concrete date. Skeptics even doubt whether the game will appear this year.
Still, there’s plenty of reason to pre-order the game. Nintendo managed to create a masterpiece with the first part that countless players still enjoy. Add to that the fact that the second part seems to deepen the mechanics of the 2017 title and further tells the story around The Great Calamity and it is a title that many gamers look forward to.
The best games of 2022 for pre-order
These are the best pre-order games of 2022 if you ask us. We would have loved to have given games like God of War Ragnarok a spot, but it can’t be pre-ordered (officially) yet. After all, Sony has not yet opened the pre-orders for this, something that usually happens a few months before release. Of course it is a game (along with many others) that we are looking forward to for 2022. For example, check out the coolest open-world games that we are looking forward to this year.
