JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The 2022 Eid homecoming was warmly welcomed by the people of Indonesia after the annual routine agenda was canceled for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Based on a survey by the Ministry of Transportation, as many as 85.5 million people intend to go home this year.
“This is good news as well as a challenge for all stakeholder to be able to serve well,” said Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, quoted from a press release, Monday (9/5/2022).
Due to the peaking public interest, Minister of Transportation Budi believes that the services provided are still not optimal.
Minister of Transportation Budi said that his party would conduct an evaluation so that homecoming activities could be better anticipated in the future.

“Therefore, we apologize for not being able to meet the expectations of all parties,” added the Minister of Transportation Budi.
Regarding this matter, Public Policy Observer Agus Pambagio believes that traffic jams will inevitably occur during the Lebaran season.
“Whatever the reason, there will be traffic jams, because the infrastructure is not sufficient for the human population, because we failed Family Planning (KB),” Agus explained when contacted by Kompas.com.
According to him, the currently available infrastructure is no longer able to accommodate the population who simultaneously travels back and forth.
Not only that, the almost extinction of urban transportation and village transportation is also one of the causes of traffic jams during going home.

“If you don’t want to get stuck, take the train and it’s definitely on time. If it’s by road, yes, because the Regional Government has never seriously handled urban transportation and rural transportation, so people tend to bring private vehicles,” Agus added.
So according to him, the handling of urban transportation and rural transportation is something that needs to be considered.
Especially in the current economic condition that has not yet recovered, it is not possible to build new non-toll roads.
Another method that can still be used until the next homecoming period is traffic engineering, such as: one way, contraflow to even odd.
In addition, the government in the future is also expected to be better able to regulate vehicles so that they do not park carelessly on arterial roads or on toll roads
Nevertheless, Agus said that the efforts made by the relevant parties to resolve the traffic jams during this year’s homecoming had been carried out optimally.
“If there is still a traffic jam, it will definitely be jammed. The problem is not to stop, to keep going slowly. But keep in mind, anyone who goes home and returns by land will definitely get stuck,” concluded Agus.
