At least 30 militants were killed and three vehicles destroyed in a US attack on terror organization Al Shabaab in Somalia, according to the army command. The attack already took place on Friday, but was only announced by the Americans on Saturday.
The US attack follows a storming of a Somali army base by Al Shabaab earlier on Friday. The attack was repelled, but not without casualties. According to the Somali Ministry of Information, seven Somali soldiers were killed, while its own forces killed about 100 Al Shabaab fighters.
The storming forced the Americans to launch a “collective self-defense attack”, according to a statement from US Africa Command. The attack took place about 260 kilometers north of the Somali capital Mogadishu.
The US military has been active in Somalia for many years. At the time of the Somali Civil War in the early 1990s, US troops were present in the country, which became involved in the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu. In addition, so-called Black Hawk helicopters were shot down, an event that was filmed in 2001 (Black Hawk Down).
