World Cup Biathlon: Doll sprints to third place – Fourcade wins

-

Benedikt Doll gave the German biathletes the fourth individual podium of the season.

The former world champion was flawless in the Ruhpolding World Cup sprint and only had to surrender seven-time World Cup overall winner Martin Fourcade and his French team-mate Quentin Fillon Maillet. The two also hit all ten targets. After ten kilometers, the 29-year-old Doll, who had won the sprint at Le Grand-Bornand before Christmas, was twelve seconds behind first and 3.1 seconds behind Maillet.

The excellent German team result was rounded off by Philipp Nawrath in seventh and Johannes Kühn in ninth place. The 26-year-old Nawrath, who was part of the team for the weak Simon Schempp, also remained without a penalty and was the fifth German to meet the World Cup standard. This gives the three Germans a promising starting position for the final persecution on Sunday.

In front of more than 11,000 spectators, Olympic champion Arnd Peiffer, second in the mass start in Oberhof, had to settle for 22nd place after two penalties. Roman Rees (0), who also moved up from the second-class IBU Cup, finished 19th, Philipp Horn (2 errors) finished 24th.
