(ANSA) – BRAZIL, JUN 07 – Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said today that the number of coronavirus deaths in his country could be 50% lower than the official toll, which reports over 473,000 victims since the start of the pandemic .
“I give you first-hand news: the Court of Auditors is not confident in the number of deaths from Covid last year; about 50% of those attributed to the virus in reality would not be,” said the head of state. “This report came out a few days ago: logically the press will not disclose it, I have already passed it to three serious journalists and now we will disclose it,” Bolsonaro added during an informal conversation in Brasilia.
It is not the first time that the far-right leader, considered a denier, has questioned the death toll, while some local researchers believe that in Brazil the number of dead and infected is “underestimated”.
